Title: could have lost a lot of weight on the pages

Review: in the spirit of ultralite, the book itself does not practice what it preaches. if/when you read this book, u will look at the world dif (see how i cut out a few letters to save space/letter weight and u still got the message).

5 stars because its a great book in general.

kept the review short and simple like the book teaches but i still could have shaved off some stuff

Review: This book is very funny, and takes a light hearted approach. You will find yourself laughing throughout the book.
Some tips I want to draw your attention to.

An aluminum cat food can pulled out of the the trash makes an efficient lightweight stove.
Excuse me? The Super Cat (yes I have made those) is light weight but would not call it efficient especially on fuel. A standard Super cat will burn 1/4 cup of alcohol in 12 minutes. There are much more fuel efficient stoves for sale, and DIY vids on You Tube. In great conditions my MAHALO stove can boil two cups water with 12.5-15 ml of alcohol 1/4th the amount needed for a Super Cat. If you like to DIY there are two vids on You Tube giving the dimensions of the MAHALO 1.4, and 1.5 so you can build your own stove

He recommends a single edge razor blade as a cutting tool instead of taking a knife.
It's true that a razor blade can replace some of the cutting needs; but a Razor blade can NEVER replace a knife. A knife can baton wood for a camp fire, make furze sticks for tinder, and use to defend yourself. There is a huge difference between going light, and going stupid light. I will never leave my Mora with fire steel in the handle at home. My pack before adding consumables is only 11 pounds, and almost 1 pound is in my combination survival/first aid kit.

#30 he revisited making a stove from a cat food can. He also said you can carry fuel for the stove in a soda bottle, and make a windscreen from aluminum foil.
If you carry alcohol in a plastic bottle either put some food color in the alcohol, or put a warning on the bottle. You would not want someone drinking the alcohol believing it to be water.

Making a windscreen from aluminum foil. Start with about 1.5 feet of aluminum foil. Keeping the width of the aluminum fold in half, and fold again. You will have a strip of aluminum as long as the roll, and 4 inches wide. It makes a decent windscreen.

The article "Going SUL" by Ryan Jordan was a treat. SUL means Super UltraLight (pack weight of 5 pounds or less).

#54 making your own toothpaste dots (dehydrating toothpaste, and cutting them in 1/2 inch segments so you can brush your teeth on the trail is a WONDERFUL idea instead of carrying a small tube of toothpaste.

I am not going to leave toilet paper at home, and wipe with rock's leaves, or snow as the author suggests. As long as I get my pack down to less than 20 pounds with the food and fuel; that is as light as I need to go.

Review: This book should be required reading before buying a backpack.

After reading this book, I went from an 80 liter pack, with a base weight of 60 pounds for an overnighter/3 day trip, to a 50 liter 20 pound base weight. I could lose another 10 liters, as there is excess room in the 50 now, but I may need the volume for winter hikes when I have more bulk.

I may never get to where Mike can, and get to a 10 pound base weight, because I cannot see myself leaving ALL my comforts at home because I am 55 years old, and I bring some things like a little medicinal whiskey to help make the ground softer for sleeping, heh. But Mike has changed the way I look at any and every item before I put it in my pack. I weigh each item now, and really give thought to how important the item is, and if something lighter can do the same job. After the trip, I now empty the pack and determine what I needed, what I wanted, and what I did not use at all. The pack gets lighter every trip now.

I used to dread the walk, but did it because it was worth it. I now enjoy the walk to places of beauty and solitude. No longer am I a pack mule staring at the trail as I lurch up another hill, missing much of the beauty of the hike itself. I walk head up. I look around and see so much more. I venture off on the side trails and get scenic Kodak photo opportunities I would have missed in the old days.

This book has liberated me on the trail. Thanks Mike!

Title: Your tips will get me through my next mountain Ultra!!!

Review: Absolutely LOVE this book! Im about to head to the Pyrenees from Australia to run across the 866km length of the GR10 there..in 16.5 days! I use the word run loosely..its fast packing in my world! Thanks to THIS book i have a whole lot better chance of making the Cut Off times and not totally burying myself three days in!
In the stressful lead up to leaving in a few days with all the associated tasks one must do when leaving family, animals, business etc in someone else's hands for 8 weeks (I'm going over to train there first!) jumping into bed with this book every night saw me relax, de stress, giggle and marvel at "why the hell didn't i think of using/doing/not taking that??!!"
Ive not taken a stove out for a long time (no coffee drinking vegan...i could care less about "warm meals" (MOST the time ;-) so somethings I'm at ease with but so many things are going to benefit me greatly for this race and forever more!

Im aiming at 11kg with 3.5kg of calorifically dense food to last me the 4 days of mountain "running" between drop bags. Not counting 2L of water/Liquid Nutrition... so total no more than 13kg (or 28.5 LB) at outset. I just did 223km in 5 days with 15kg (northern territory Larapinta Trail in centra; australia...hard rough dry country) and could run with that so reckon I will be ok.. but aiming for lighter if i can.

Interestingly met a young guy from Chicago out there with 6kg!!!! did it easy in 6 days and in retrospect, I'm sure read your book from things he said :-)
