Dave Anderson was one of the leading American sportswriters of our time. He began writing for the New York Times in 1966 and was given his own column in 1971. He was inducted into the National Sports Writers and Sportscasters Hall of Fame in 1990. Dave passed away in 2018.

He has been a reporter for the New York Times since 1997, best known for his sports journalism on golf, skiing, baseball, football, and other sports. In 2015, Pennington authored the New York Times bestseller Billy Martin: Baseball's Flawed Genius. He lives in Warwick, New York with his wife, Joyce, and three children.

Review: The history of the Yankees lasts more than 100 years and the history of the New York Times is 50 years longer than that. So it is truly appropriate that the long and glorious history of the Yankees is reported in this book by a newspaper with an equally long and glorious history.
And what a book it is! The accounts of the team's history are given by in the actual stories of the games and moves, by the reporters who covered these events, organized by time period, and theme. Thus the Babe Ruth-Lou Gehrig era chapter ends not with Ruth going to the Boston Braves in 1934, but by his final appearance at the Stadium and death, along with the legendary Pulitzer-winning photograph of the aging Ruth facing up at the Stadium for that last time. The chapter that follows is the DiMaggio era, and it ends, yes, with his obituary. The result is a pleasant overlap of events and stories.
They're great stories, too. The writers who covered the Yankees for the Times include such incredible names as John Drebinger, Louis Effrat, Leonard Koppett, Joe Durso, Murray Chass, William C. Rhoden, Arthur Daley, and Red Smith. That's a "Murderer's Row" of writing talent.
This is a book filled with nostalgia and history, written in the style of the times it covers, and fans of the Yankees -- and the New York Times -- will enjoy this book immensely.
